What is the Easiest and Hardest of the 14 Peaks to Climb?

Climbing any, or all, of the world’s 14 highest peaks is a monumental achievement in mountaineering. However, not all of these peaks are created equal in terms of difficulty. Some, like K2 and Annapurna, are notorious for their danger and technical challenges, while others, such as Broad Peak and Gasherbrum II, are considered less daunting and are the perfect training grounds for those wishing to take their first step into the world of 8,000ers. But make no mistake—every 8,000m peak presents extreme risks – this is the same with any extreme sport. However, at Elite Exped safety is always our top priority – our team comprises multiple world-record breakers and guides with the highest level of skill and experience. We will be with you every step of the way, before, during and after the climb to ensure you are prepared, confident and ready to achieve your new possible. Find out more below:

The Hardest: K2 and Annapurna

K2, in Pakistan, known as the "Savage Mountain," is widely regarded as the most challenging of the 14 peaks. Standing at 8,611m, K2's steep, technical terrain and unpredictable weather make it a challenging climb even for the most experienced mountaineers. The ascent involves navigating through sections like the "Bottleneck"—a steep couloir which can see avalanches and serac falls. The combination of high altitude, severe weather, and complex route-finding makes K2 a formidable challenge that demands the highest level of skill, preparation, and mental fortitude. We have an excellent success rate on K2 – it is a mountain that will always be close to our hearts. In January 2021 our team were part of the ten-strong Nepali climbing team that first stood on the summit in winter – setting a new world record.

Annapurna, although slightly lower in elevation at 8,091m, is often cited as one of the deadliest mountains in the world. The mountain's south face is particularly perilous, with frequent avalanches and challenging technical sections. The unpredictable nature of the mountain, coupled with the difficult terrain, makes it a serious challenge even for seasoned climbers. That is why having an experienced team by your side every step of the way is so important.

In contrast, Broad Peak (8,051m) and Gasherbrum II (8,035m) are often considered among the more accessible of the 8000m peaks and make good first 8,000ers for those looking to take the next step in their high-altitude climbing evolution. Broad Peak, located near K2 in the Karakoram range, offers a less technical ascent, though it still requires significant mountaineering skills and experience. The summit push involves a lengthy traverse, but the climb is generally less steep and does not have the same level of technical challenges as K2.

Similarly, Gasherbrum II is known for being one of the "easier" 8000m peaks, with a relatively straightforward route compared to others. The climb is less technically demanding, and the weather conditions, while still extreme, are often more stable than those on other 8,000m peaks. However, it’s crucial to note that “easier” is relative—climbing any 8,000m peak involves serious risks, and careful preparation and expert guidance are essential for a safe and successful ascent. At Elite Exped we believe in leading from the front, being by your side at each step and helping you achieve your mountaineering goals.

Safety is Paramount

While some peaks are considered more "manageable" than others, it’s important to remember that all 8,000m climbs come with inherent dangers. High-altitude mountaineering is an extreme sport, and as with every extreme sport there is risk. At Elite Exped, we prioritise the safety of our clients above all else. Our world-record-breaking team is dedicated to providing the highest level of support, from meticulous planning to on-the-ground expertise, ensuring that every expedition is as safe and successful as possible.

We have a success rate and understanding on these peaks that is world class. As shown in the movie 14 Peaks: nothing is Impossible, which is available now on Netflix, our directors have a Guinness World Record setting track record. It was our Director Nims ‘Nimsdai’ Purja who first thought of the new ‘Nimsdai style’ of climbing and logistics to allow multiple ascents of 14 Peaks in a season. Originally climbers would only climb one or two mountains a year and now we help clients climb multiple 8,000m peaks ina. season – join us and make your Big Dreams a reality.
