6000m Peaks

Climb Island Peak

An introduction to the
highs of the Himalayas.

Island Peak
Climbing

Nicknamed Island Peak by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s 1953 Mount Everest Expedition, the mountain properly known as Imja Tse is a perfect introduction to the rigours of Himalayan climbing. At 6,189m above sea level, the peak appears as an island surrounded by a sea of ice if viewed from Dingboche, and offers stunning views of Everest and Lhotse, but is actually relatively accessible. If you’re just embarking on Himalayan climbs, an ascent of Island Peak with Elite Exped is a great place to start.

Aimed at mountaineers and trekkers with a high level of basic fitness, and an aptitude for altitude. Prior experience of big mountain environments is preferred but not necessary. We can teach you what you need to know on this peak.

What the adventure involves

Elite Exped has deep roots in the Himalayas, with the bulk of our guiding team, including our co-founder Mingma David, drawn from the Sherpa communities that surround the world’s highest mountains. We feel at home here, and while many people might not think of tackling a 6,000m plus peak as their first serious mountaineering challenge, our unparalleled experience means we can help you feel at home here too - starting with an ascent of Island Peak.

Our itinerary on this popular mountain is based on the successful expedition plans implemented multiple times by our record-breaking leaders, Nimsdai and Mingma David. From the moment you land in Kathmandu to the moment you depart, we like to allow 18 days, giving you plenty of time to rest and acclimatise, as well as a generous climbing window.

Every aspect of our itinerary has been tried and tested multiple times over, and we know from our extensive experience that as long as you have the required level of fitness, no previous Himalayan experience is needed. For this reason, we often recommend the Island Peak expedition as a first step for people who are looking to build up to more serious mountaineering objectives in future.

At Elite Exped, we pride ourselves on our ability to control every aspect of our expeditions, rather than relying on third parties. We control the controllable to ensure that we meet the very highest safety standards. Our founders’ Nepalese heritage and ability to bridge the gap between Western and Himalayan climbing cultures allows us to run every aspect of our operation smoothly, without fear of misunderstandings. The success of our approach is evident in our co-founder Nimsdai’s own achievements, including his 100 percent success rate on 8,000m climbs.

As well as being highly-skilled mountaineers, our guides have extensive experience of conducting high-altitude rescue operations. We have evacuation plans and accessible helicopter rescue in place for emergencies. No-one can cater for every eventuality in the world’s most extreme environments, but we can guarantee that you will be in the safest possible hands should something unexpected happen.

We don’t see our clients as clients - we see them as friends and fellow high-achievers. People who, like us, have made chasing their dreams a priority. Whether your dream is simply to climb this peak, or whether you have a future objective in mind, we will help you achieve it.

Why choose
Elite Exped?

Unparalleled
leadership

Nimsdai Purja, Mingma David Sherpa’s and Mingma Tenzi’s mountaineering groundbreaking records speak for themselves, but our leaders are more than just supremely talented climbers.

While some choose to direct operations from back office, our three directors lead from the front. Their experience in every aspect of guiding and climbing — from fixing ropes to organising logistics — is unparalleled. It's no surprise that they have the industry-leading success rate when it comes to summiting 8,000m peaks.

Beyond this, our handpicked team of guides have also chalked up dozens of successful summits between them.

Safety through
self-sufficiency

If it’s controllable we control it: this is key to attaining and maintaining our industry-leading strategy for success and safety.

We maximise our options, agility and responsiveness by running self-sufficient expeditions that don’t rely on any other teams to achieve our objectives.

Our team is capable of setting up our own fixed lines (with a proven track record on all 8,000m peaks) and has backups to cover all scenarios. These include everything from secondary oxygen supplies to the ability and experience to operate our own rescue missions if the situation arises.

A unique
perspective

With his Nepalese roots and UK residency, our co-founder Nimsdai Purja brings a unique perspective and an unparalleled ability to bridge the gap between Western and Himalayan climbing cultures.

We can assemble trusted teams and networks anywhere in the world, but our founders’ roots are a particular advantage when it comes to summiting the world’s very highest peaks.

An intimate knowledge of how things work on the ground ensures that everything runs smoothly when you’re 8,000m above sea-level.

6000m Peaks

Standing at 6,119m above sea level, high above the glaciers of the Khumbu region of Nepal, Lobuche East is a significant peak, but also one of the most popular, and the easiest to climb.

6000m Peaks

At 6,812m above sea level, Ama Dablam is a long way off the highest peaks in the Himalayas, and yet climbing it is regarded as a true achievement among the mountaineering fraternity. The technical rock and ice climbing skills needed to reach the summit mean you can find Everest veterans, or people who’ve made other 8,000m summits, running into difficulty. In these circumstances, having guides who know the mountain like the back of their hands is essential.

Rising to 6,476m above sea level, Mera Peak, in Khumbu region of Nepal, is known as the gateway to Everest. From its summit, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views which take in five of the world’s highest mountains - Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and, of course, Everest. But it’s not just the views that give Mera its reputation. This relatively easy mountain is often the first Himalayan climbs that mountaineers tackle, paving the way for greater conquests in future.
