8000m Peaks

Climb Manaslu

Summit the Mountain of the Spirit and take on your first 8000m peak

Manaslu
Expedition

Characterized by its sharp, picturesque peak, Manaslu dominates the Mansiri-Himal subrange of the Himalayas. First summited by a Japanese team in 1956, the world’s eighth-highest mountain has a long association with Japanese climbers, but among Europeans remains one of the less well-known peaks. Reaching the summit at 8,163m is a serious undertaking, but one that Elite Exped is ideally equipped to help you achieve.

Manaslu is a firm favorite for getting our clients prepped and ready for Mt Everest, as an 8000m peak it's no underdog, but provides you with the necessary skill, fitness level, and mindset to take on an 8000m peak.

The Mountain of the Spirit

Despite its difficult climbing history - there were four unsuccessful Japanese expeditions between 1950 and 1955 before it was finally conquered - Manaslu is a deceptively easy mountain to climb.

Generally reckoned to be among the least dangerous of the 8,000ers, it lacks the technical sections that make summits like K2, Kanchenjunga or Everest more tricky. Indeed, Manaslu is often treated as a preparatory climb for an attempt on the latter - a practise we at Elite Exped encourage, as we require everyone to have summited at least one other 8,000m peak before joining our Everest expeditions.

But Manaslu is still an 8,000m peak, and climbing it necessitates a lengthy period of time spent in the so-called “death zone”. The proper preparation, training and guidance that Elite Exped can provide is essential.

Our standard 35-day Manaslu expedition includes helicopters to the village of Samagaun, and offers plenty of time for acclimatisation, as well as rest days.

Elite Exped’s team of guides - handpicked by our record-breaking leaders, Nimsdai and Mingma David - have extensive experience of guiding on Manaslu. Our guides’ Himalayan heritage gives them invaluable local knowledge, which we combine with the very highest Western safety standards.

We control every controllable aspect of our climbs, never relying on third party providers for fixing ropes or route finding. This helps us ensure that your summit experience will run as smoothly as possible.

As well as being highly-skilled mountaineers, our guides have extensive experience of conducting high-altitude rescue operations. No-one can cater for every eventuality in the world’s most extreme environments, but we can guarantee that you will be in the safest possible hands should something unexpected happen.

We don’t see our clients as clients - we see them as friends and fellow high-achievers. We’ll make sure no stone is left unturned in our quest to help you achieve your dreams. We hope that your successful, safe summit attempt on Manaslu will lead you on to even greater feats in future.

Manaslu 2023

Climbed with Vinne (vinay) very good guide. For the future I suggest more detailed breifings about the next step described for a what we will encounter from C1 to C2 e.t.c. Overall though super happy about expedition. Food excellent! Think you should only accept more experienced climbers though or not the very least who have less tutorials about basic techniques.

Why choose
Elite Exped?

Unparalleled
leadership

Nimsdai Purja, Mingma David Sherpa’s and Mingma Tenzi’s mountaineering groundbreaking records speak for themselves, but our leaders are more than just supremely talented climbers.

While some choose to direct operations from back office, our three directors lead from the front. Their experience in every aspect of guiding and climbing — from fixing ropes to organising logistics — is unparalleled. It's no surprise that they have the industry-leading success rate when it comes to summiting 8,000m peaks.

Beyond this, our handpicked team of guides have also chalked up dozens of successful summits between them.

Safety through
self-sufficiency

If it’s controllable we control it: this is key to attaining and maintaining our industry-leading strategy for success and safety.

We maximise our options, agility and responsiveness by running self-sufficient expeditions that don’t rely on any other teams to achieve our objectives.

Our team is capable of setting up our own fixed lines (with a proven track record on all 8,000m peaks) and has backups to cover all scenarios. These include everything from secondary oxygen supplies to the ability and experience to operate our own rescue missions if the situation arises.

A unique
perspective

With his Nepalese roots and UK residency, our co-founder Nimsdai Purja brings a unique perspective and an unparalleled ability to bridge the gap between Western and Himalayan climbing cultures.

We can assemble trusted teams and networks anywhere in the world, but our founders’ roots are a particular advantage when it comes to summiting the world’s very highest peaks.

An intimate knowledge of how things work on the ground ensures that everything runs smoothly when you’re 8,000m above sea-level.

K2 isn’t nicknamed “the savage mountain” for nothing. The world’s second highest peak is arguably the toughest challenge in mountaineering, but nearby Broad Peak, the world’s 12th highest mountain, is the perfect stepping stone to tackling this daunting challenge. This expedition offers you the chance to conquer two of the Karakorum’s most iconic peaks in the space of a single summer climbing season.

8000m Peaks

Broad Peak, across the Baltoro Glaciers of north-eastern Pakistan to K2, is named for both its most prominent feature - a 2km wide summit ridge - and its similarity to Switzerland’s Breithorn (which means ‘broad horn’ in German). This defining characteristic is one of the features that makes this a relatively easy climb when compared to the other 8,000ers. For this reason, it’s often used as a wide stepping stone to further adventures, including its near neighbour, K2.
