How Much Does it Cost to Climb K2?

K2 isn't just the world's second-highest peak, it's widely considered the most formidable climb. For decades, it earned the nickname "Savage Mountain" due to its treacherous terrain, unpredictable weather, and unforgiving conditions. Expeditions to K2 are far less frequent than those to Everest, with successful summits even rarer. But for those who dream of conquering this legendary peak, the question arises: how much does it cost to climb K2?

A breakdown of K2 expedition costs

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to how much it costs to climb K2. Prices can vary significantly depending on the type of expedition you choose. Here's a breakdown of our expedition costs:

Full-service expedition

If standing atop this “savage mountain” is your dream, then you may be interested in our K2 expedition climb. Starting at $60,000 USD, this 47-day trek is aimed at those who have already made at least two ascents of 8000m peaks. Our extended itinerary allows a longer period for acclimatisation and rest, alongside a buffer week for unpredictable weather.

Fast-track expedition

For some, balancing work and other commitments with a 47-day trek is impossible. That’s why we created a K2 fast-track expedition. Priced at $85,000, we can help you to summit the savage mountain in less than a month. We pride ourselves in knowing there is no other company with the same relevant experience, ability, and proven track record that offers this approach.

K2 and Broad Peak

We offer a combo package that enables you to conquer two of the Karakoram’s most iconic peaks. This route, priced at $80,000, will see hikers summit Broad Peak — noted as one of the easier 8,000m peaks due to its direct, short, and low-altitude passages — and then tackle the slopes of K2.

Are there cheaper alternatives?

You may find that some adventure companies offer K2 expeditions at lower prices. However, while our expedition prices may seem higher, consider this: our mission isn't just to get you to the top of the world's toughest mountain, it's to get you there safely.

We invest in the most experienced guides, the highest quality equipment, and the most comprehensive support to maximize your chances of success while minimizing risk.

Our guiding team are not just hugely experienced climbers, they’re also qualified mountain rescue professionals. We have evacuation plans and accessible helicopter rescue in place, ready to go at short notice should it be needed. We also guarantee a 1:1 guide-to-client ratio on every expedition with four additional climbing sherpas to support us as reserves — meaning you could not be in safer hands.

Visas and other pre-climb costs

While most K2 expedition packages cover essentials like hotels, transportation, permits, and meals, some additional costs are your responsibility.

Visas

All travellers must have a valid Pakistan trekking visa before the start of their trip. You can apply for the First Time Single Entry Visa via an application form and a sponsor letter authorised by your tour operator and this typically costs around $100 USD. Please note that this can take several weeks to process so make sure to leave enough time in advance to apply.

Insurance

Standard travel insurance policies won't cut it for the conditions of K2. You'll need specialized high-altitude mountaineering insurance with robust medical coverage. This crucial protection should encompass:

  • • Medical emergencies at high altitudes, including altitude sickness, hypothermia, and other medical conditions.
  • • Helicopter evacuation from the mountain in case of serious accidents or illness.
  • • Medical treatment and hospitalisation in Pakistan, including emergency procedures.

Tipping

Tipping Sherpas on a K2 trip goes beyond just a simple gratuity. This is a well-established custom in the K2 climbing industry and is a genuine way to showcase respect and appreciation for the Sherpas' hard work, dedication, and the risks they take to support your climb.

We usually give tips after the summit and recommend a minimum bonus tip of $2000 USD for the climbing team and $600 USD for Base Camp staff.
