How to train to climb Mount Everest

Mount Everest — synonymous with images of soaring summits and a sense of adventure — calls to anybody who has ever wanted to stand at the pinnacle of the globe. But getting to the top is no simple task. It requires an unwavering mindset, highly technical skills, and the endurance of an experienced alpinist in addition to an appetite for adventure.

This guide covers all the advanced training techniques, mental preparation, and logistical planning needed to complete this phenomenal feat, making sure you have the resources and know-how to handle the obstacles of the world’s highest peak.

A Strategic Approach to Training

The journey to the summit of Everest begins long before the first step is made towards base camp; to prepare sufficiently, climbers must first dedicate their bodies and minds to a demanding and rigorously structured training schedule.

Physical preparation for Everest goes beyond typical workouts. It takes months or even years of focused training to build a foundation of strength, endurance, and altitude adaptation. To ensure you’re physically capable of tackling the climb, consider incorporating the following types of training into your routine:

  • • Endurance Training: Swimming, cycling, and long-distance running improve cardiovascular capacity, which is important for sustained effort over the several weeks required to reach the top of Everest.
  • • Strength Training: Aimed at enhancing upper body endurance, lower body strength, and core stability to handle the physical demands of climbing and gear hauling.
  • • Altitude Acclimatisation: To get the body used to the lower oxygen levels on Everest, combine high-altitude excursions or use altitude simulation training.

Required Experience

Climbing Mount Everest requires prior experience with high-altitude climbs. You are typically expected to have tackled peaks over 6000 metres in elevation, such as Aconcagua or Manaslu, before attempting Everest. These climbs are vital not only for developing physical strength and technical skills – but also for understanding how your body adjusts to high altitudes. Aconcagua is South America's highest peak, and Manaslu is the world's eighth highest peak and they both provide experience in dealing with the circumstances found on Everest. If you've successfully summited Aconcagua and demonstrated exceptional performance, our expert guides may recommend skipping Manaslu and directly attempting Everest. However, to be eligible for this accelerated path, you must have prior climbing experience with our team to allow for a thorough assessment of your abilities.

Psychological Readiness

As we've established, climbing Everest has physical challenges — however, it also has mental and emotional demands. The unforgiving environment, the constant risk of avalanches, and the ever-present threat of thin air all conspire to erode mental fortitude. To conquer Everest, climbers  need to train their minds to develop the following qualities:

  • • Resilience: The positive attitude and unwavering determination to triumph over obstacles, whether it's battling harsh weather conditions or overcoming health issues.
  • • Patience: This is essential to manage the long expedition schedule and the time spent waiting for the best weather windows.
  • • Focus: Success and safety on the mountain depend on the ability to stay focused for lengthy periods of time.
  • • Teamwork and Communication: Effective teamwork and communication skills, like active listening, clear decision-making, and mutual trust, are vital for high-altitude climbing.

Climbing Skills

Because Everest's terrain varies from ice fields to rocky passageways, technical climbing abilities are essential. Climbers need to have experience in using crampons and ice axes for secure footing on glaciers and employ rope techniques for safe ascents and descents. This mastery of movement becomes even more critical at extreme altitudes, where even basic tasks become difficult and clear judgement is paramount. Climbers need to be experts at:

  • • Ice Climbing: To navigate the Khumbu Icefall and other glaciated portions of the climb, you must be comfortable with ice axes and crampons.
  • • Rope Work: To successfully navigate Everest's obstacles, you must be knowledgeable in the use of fixed lines, rappelling, and crevasse rescue methods.

The Road to Everest

Everest is a monumental challenge. Even with rigorous training, individual responses to high altitude can vary significantly. To ensure optimal preparation, we recommend a strategic approach that allows your body to acclimatise gradually to high altitude. Here's our suggested roadmap to help you reach the summit:

Gradual Progression:

  • • Classic Peaks (6000m) + Bespoke Training Package: A solid foundation for building altitude tolerance.
  • • Kilimanjaro + Aconcagua + Manaslu + another 8000m (Everest): A well-structured sequence to progressively increase altitude exposure.

Accelerated Approach:

  • • Bespoke Training Package/Kilimanjaro + Aconcagua + Manaslu + other 8000m (Everest): For individuals with strong fitness and a willingness to push their limits.
  • • Aconcagua + Manaslu + Other 8000m (Everest): This is for individuals who already have a few 6000m under their belt.
  • • Option 5: Ama Dablam + Any 8000m: A highly technical peak that can prepare you for the technical demands of Everest. This is a very fast approach and is normally only recommended to more seasoned climbers.

Remember — the ideal path is personalised. Your unique fitness level, experience, and personal goals will influence the best approach. The optimal timeline and specific climbs can be adjusted based on your individual needs and preferences. Our expert team can help you create a customised plan.
